She all but dove through the shattered glass and ended up sprawled on the ground. Pushing herself harder she found what the waypoint was aiming at, a small restaurant with a blown-out window. Bullets began to slam into the ground around her and several began to impact her shields, nearly knocking her off her feet. By the time she got halfway, her attackers seemed to wake up. Taking a deep breath to fill her lungs she lurched to her feet and raced forward. Peeking her head out of cover she couldn’t see any obvious signs that the road was being covered. Ashley let out a sigh of relief, at least someone was still alive in this mess. On her HUD, she could make out the haze of a waypoint across the road from her, though she was getting a lot of feedback on her helmet’s readout. Suddenly her Omni-Tool pinged, bringing her attention up.

Plus given how many non-Batarians they passed as they moved through the streets most of the people they would hit weren’t even the enemy. That meant no orbital strikes, and no bombing runs, leaving the grunts to do the dirty work of clearing out the city. The issue was that without the dome the city would be useless as the staging area for the campaign. Ash hadn’t been under an air dome since her mom took the family to meet her grandparents on Mars.

The spaceport was about as close to a real city on this hellhole planet, and it was only thanks to the massive dome that it was even habitable. Dog and Bravo units had been assigned to clear out a group of habitats on the southern reaches of the city. The 212 had been assigned to clear out Nutahk, and so far it had been two hours of relentless fighting. Shouts of pain from friend and foe, distant-sounding gunfire, and the crackle of the Grizzly as it burned.

As she tried to get as much air into her lungs as she could Ashley could hear the sounds of battle all around her. Taking the recoil of her rifle every time she had to return fire was not helping. She already took a shot in her right shoulder and the Medi-gel was doing jack for the pain. After the initial blast disabled their transport the entire firefight had been a blur.ĭiving behind a small pile of rocks that was once a statue she struggled to catch her breath. Her entire unit appeared to be surrounded, and at this point, she was unsure who was even still alive. Firing blindly into the building where the shots came from she quickly raced to find cover.

Private Ashley Williams gasped as another series of rounds whizzed past her head and clanged against the Grizzly behind her. This changed with the development of the fighter-launched mass disruptor torpedo, a short-ranged weapon that can penetrate kinetic barriers to destroy their projector assemblies"

"Only the main gun of a dreadnought could punch a mass accelerator slug through the barriers of an opposing dreadnought. The importance here is that, before the carriers, only a dreadnought could fight a dreadnought but with the appearance of carriers and its fighters, there suddenly was an alternative to destroy dreadnoughts. Because extra mass retards acceleration, torpedoes are easy prey for defensive GARDIAN weapons and must therefore be launched at extremely close range to be effective."īefore the carriers, the torpedo were useless because the GARDIAN weapons could eliminate them all, as they were launched from distance (ship-to-ship)īut with fighters they could be launched close-enough that that GARDIAN couldnt defend against all. "In flight, torpedoes use a mass-increasing field, making them too huge for enemy kinetic barriers to repel. The torpedos were obsolete, until the carriers (mass fighters) appeared. Humans – who had only recently "graduated" from surface to space combat – were the first to build ships wielding fighters as the main armament. Dreadnoughts have a hangar deck within the hull.

Cruisers fit a handful in the space between the interior pressure hulls and exterior armor. "All races provide their fleets with organic fighter support. There were fighters before the humans, but in few numbers and only as complement for their cruisers/dreadnoughts.
